Federation captain Janne Andersson has presented his squad that will go on the January 2022 tour to the Algarve in Portugal. The squad consists of twenty-four players and as many as seventeen are debutants.
today the last squad of the year is presented. How do you look back on the men's national team's 2021?
For the most part, I think we are doing an approved year. Many really nice performances but then of course it is colored by the latest collection and I have probably not finished the bull yet. But when I think back, we push a team like Spain for first place in the World Cup qualifying group and win our group in the European Championships. Of course we have performed very well in football but we want more.
Due to Corona, there was no January tour this year. How important is the tour for your business?
It is very important. We have a number of players who have taken the step from the January tour into the "real" national team. We get the opportunity to see new players in our way of playing and we get to know the guys a little better. From the players' point of view, the January tour is a good first national team experience. If and when you come to the national team again, you have a good idea of how we work and what demands we place on our players.
How have you been thinking about the squad composition this year?
We have a large gross list that we start from, then as always we have a good dialogue with especially the coaches in the Allsvenskan where we talk about which players could be relevant. There are some players who have already been on the January tour and others who have been on "regular" national team gatherings as well. But the vast majority of players are debutants. I press we have got to a good mix.
A number of players who played in U21 during the year who take the step to the January tour. How important is it?
It is of course very fun and that is how we want it to work. Poya and Andreas have done a good job with U21 during the year and it will be very fun to see the guys in our business. Several of them have had a very good development during the season so it will be fun to see them with us.
It's over with a match against Finland. How do you see the resistance?
Finland has taken great strides in recent years and it will be a good measure of value for us. I have good contact with my counterpart in Finland Markku before the camp and I know that both he and I appreciate the opportunity to meet new players to work with.
